A welcome message from GSN

The first ideas for the creation of a network of globalization research centers were spawned at a lunch among colleagues back in fall 2002. The proposition was made that the topic of globalization and its multidisciplinary perspective was beyond the capacity of any one university to take on and address comprehensively. It was agreed that a coalition of university research centers from all over the world would be able to pool their expertise in globalization and make a more credible and persuasive case to funders about the merits of research proposals addressing the issues of globalization.

With that initial spark, the Globalization Studies Network has become established. Its formation is a true work of pooling different perspectives and ideas and an interdisciplinary collaboration. An exploratory meeting was hosted by the GW Center for the Study of Globalization in Washington, D.C. January 2003, with about fifteen participants. A follow-up planning meeting with expanded participation—more than thirty research centers—was co-hosted by the Centre for Global Studies at the University of Victoria and the Canadian International Development Research Centre in Ottawa, September 2003.

In August 2004, at the Inaugural Conference, hosted by the Centre for the Study of Globalisation & Regionalisation at Warwick University, the number of centers and institutions partaking in the formulation of GSN increased to more than eighty. At this meeting the GSN Framework was introduced and the participants agreed to adopt it as the guidelines for the formation and operation of the GSN, including an annual conference. The next meeting is scheduled for August 2006 to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

GSN participants blend diverse interests, disciplines and perspectives. The mix creates a unique association of worldwide scholars and practitioners who all share an interest in studying globalization collaboratively. Essentially, the GSN’s strength and vitality is derived from this insistence on diversity and collaboration.

We welcome all to join us.

The proposition was made that the topic of globalization and its multidisciplinary perspective was beyond the capacity of any one university…

Agenda

The Globalization Studies Network (GSN) and the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) are pleased to invite participation in the fourth GSN Conference, to be held at CIGI on 25-27 August 2008.

The special theme of the fourth GSN conference is curbing the uncivil potentials of contemporary globalization. Today’s trends towards a more global world involve productive forces of “civil society” that can help to uplift millions from poverty, deprivation and degradation. At the same time, however, globalization can also unleash destructive forces of “uncivil society.” Some of the cross-cutting topics that the conference will speak to include:

Human Trafficking
Transnational Crime
Money Laundering
Terrorism
Arms Trafficking
Disease/Health Security
The challenge for policy is how best to harness the positive possibilities of globalization while muting the disruptive aspects and taming the destructive forces. Strategies to this end could entail combinations of local action, national legislation, regional rules, and global regimes, involving both official and nonofficial actors at each level. Paper and panel proposals that explore innovative regulatory designs to curb uncivil consequences of globalization are therefore particularly encouraged. In the GSN tradition, the conference at CIGI aims once again to integrate academic research and policy experience by bringing together scholars and practitioners. In the interdisciplinary spirit of GSN, contributions are invited from fields including Business Studies, Economics, Geography, History, International Relations, Law, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology.

For inquiries, please feel free to contact gsn2008@cigionline.org.

“Towards a New Generation in Global Governance?”
Alexander Boehm – Past Globalization Conferences
The architecture and content of today’s global governance are showing interesting dynamics. The conference will analyse these developments, and try to assess whether they constitute the beginning of structural trends that will consolidate during the coming decades. We would like to point at four particular sets of interlinked developments in high-level international policy-making.

How to Join the GSN

The GSN is open to three categories of participants. ‘Members’ are research centres and programmes engaged in the study of globalization, including university units, think tanks, and other scholarly bodies. ‘Associates’ are non-academic organizations interested in the results of scholarly globalization studies, including civil society groups, official agencies, funders and businesses. ‘Supporters’ are individual globalization researchers who are not attached to an institute that focuses on the study of globalization.
In order to encourage greater participation in the GSN from the East and the South, membership is open to institutes from these parts of the world that have prospective rather than fully launched programmes in globalization studies. GSN members in the North are expected to have an established focus on globalization issues.

To join GSN, please contact Jan Aart Scholte at scholte@warwick.ac.uk.

Kiosk

Recent Kiosk Entries
The Globalization Studies Kiosk was created as a gathering place for various resources on globalization. We invite all GSN members to submit information on globalization research, policy- or curriculum-related materials. The submissions can include: books, journal articles, new websites, or other data sources.

Please send your kiosk entry to Gihani Perera (email: gperera@gwu.edu) at The George Washington University Center for the Study for Globalization.
